About modeless

modeless is an independent AI product studio building small, useful software, microservices, experiments, and interface infrastructure.

The work sits where AI becomes operational material: privacy tools, spreadsheet-to-software systems, long-horizon planning surfaces, dense public-data visualizations, and the design system needed to hold them together.

It is product-led and intentionally compact. The studio favors artifacts over pitch decks, visible system state over magic, and software that feels sharp, inspectable, and strange in the right places.

modeless is led by Allen Smith, a product designer and builder who founded Semanttic in 2022 to explore generative UX: software that can move from requirements and prompts into working interfaces, design systems, prototypes, and code.

Semanttic's technology was acquired in April 2025 by a European consultancy, which uses it as a proprietary internal tool supporting its forward-deployed engineering services. Allen is now also an angel investor in early-stage AI startups, bringing what he learned founding, funding, and exiting an AI product company to the founders he backs.
