Prototype / Chrome OS Smartbook Datacasting

Showing what a broadcast network could do beyond television

A four-week Mobile World Congress prototype showing real-time datacasting concepts on unreleased Chrome OS smartbook hardware.

I defined the applications, product story, UI direction, content needs, and demonstration experience for a four-week cross-company prototype.

Opportunity

Show what a broadcast network could do beyond television

For this prototype, the FLO TV executive team wanted to showcase the datacasting capabilities of the FLO TV network at Mobile World Congress.

Constraints

Four weeks, unreleased hardware, and no back channel

Our team had approximately four weeks to design and build a compelling datacast experience on a prototype Lenovo Skylight smartbook running an unreleased Chrome OS and proprietary Lenovo UI widgets.

The prototype used the FLO TV broadcast network to deliver data instead of relying on the internet.

My contribution

Turn a technical capability into understandable product concepts

My responsibility was to define the applications, UI direction, content rights, and the pieces needed for a smooth demo experience. Because the network was broadcast, I focused the concepts on its strengths (low latency and scale) while designing around the lack of a back channel.

  • Framed use cases around the strengths and constraints of one-way broadcast
  • Directed interaction and visual design across Qualcomm and Lenovo UI patterns
  • Coordinated engineering, design, content, and executive-demo needs
  • Prioritized a coherent story that could be built and rehearsed within four weeks
Local Buzz
Local Buzz aggregated real-time feeds such as social media and news into one feed focused on a local area or city.
Live sports data
A live sports concept paired data with video. We manually triggered events such as shot locations and fouls in the data view.

Outcomes

A working demonstration delivered under severe constraints

  • Defined the demo applications and UI direction
  • Coordinated design, engineering, content, and executive demo needs under a four-week timeline
  • Showcased real-time broadcast data concepts at Mobile World Congress
  • Demonstrated the value of design and engineering collaboration under severe technical constraints
