System / UI Sound Design
A strategic sound-design system for making appliance interactions more useful, human, calm, and brand-consistent.
I initiated and led the program, connecting brand strategy, interaction design, user research, sound craft, technical constraints, and implementation planning.

Contribution
Led research, strategy, prototyping, testing, the semantic sound library, technical framework, and roadmap.
At a glance
Most appliance sounds are treated as isolated beeps. This program treated sound as part of the interaction system: a way to communicate state, reduce uncertainty, and express the Electrolux brand without adding visual noise.
I led the research, strategy, prototyping, testing, semantic sound library, technical framework, and implementation roadmap.
We evaluated 11 common product sounds with 51 participants. The research showed that people did not simply prefer a particular tone; they needed sounds that were easier to interpret, better matched to the moment, and less intrusive in the home.

The team studied how film, games, advertising, and public environments use sound to shape attention and emotion. We then translated Electrolux brand values into four practical principles that could guide individual sounds and the system as a whole.

The survey asked 51 participants, primarily from Scandinavia, to describe four concept themes in words inspired by the Electrolux brand values, and to rate 11 system sounds for pleasantness and perceived quality. The four themes are here to be heard.

A sound file can feel appropriate in a studio and wrong on a physical product. We used video compositing and a custom hardware board to compare sound shape, sequence, tone, and speaker behavior in realistic appliance interactions.

The same concept had to work on very different hardware. The program proposal called for a global sound system that scales between low-end buzzers, mid-range polyphonic speakers, and high-quality third-party devices. The survey made the reason concrete: how good a sound seemed depended strongly on both the audio source and the speaker playing it.
At the simple end, the sound-component audit shows how little a buzzer has to work with. One specification calls for a monotone buzzer at 4 kHz, so every interaction is told apart only by its rhythm of beeps and pauses.

The soundbank spans that range. Its simple beeps are plain electronic tones.

At the other end are the concept themes above, full audio files that need a speaker able to reproduce them. Playing both ends of the range back to back is the clearest way to hear why the system had to be designed for the hardware it would run on, not only for the brand it had to express.
The work moved from isolated sound concepts to shared semantics, reusable assets, design guidance, and a technical path for implementation across product categories.
