Extending a multimodal design system into spoken interaction

Foundational voice patterns and prototypes for extending the Electrolux design system into spoken interactions.

I led the expansion of SHAPE into voice, bringing design teams and creative technologists together around research, tangible prototypes, and reusable patterns.

Opportunity

Extend a multimodal design system into spoken interaction

The Electrolux Voice Design Project expanded the design system by creating foundational voice patterns. The work involved Electrolux design teams, UX designers, and design technologists, with a focus on tangible prototypes rather than abstract documentation.

The project explored how voice patterns could become part of the broader product experience.

My contribution

Turn abstract voice guidance into tangible product behavior

I led a process covering research, ideation, and prototyping of foundational patterns for basic controls, status, scheduling, and teaching. The Electrolux team reviewed the material, tested assumptions, and helped refine the final patterns for inclusion in SHAPE.

We experimented with different tools and methodologies for prototyping voice interactions between products.

Design principles

A reusable foundation for clear, contextual responses

  • Be brief and relevant
  • Use conversational language
  • Adapt to the user's context and speech patterns
  • Confirm requests and provide useful feedback
  • Teach while answering, without turning every response into a manual

Outcomes

Patterns that could evolve with products and platforms

  • Created foundational voice patterns for the Electrolux design system
  • Prototyped tangible voice experiences across product scenarios
  • Documented syntax, sound output, and interaction principles
  • Established a pattern set that could be extended and refined over time
